“Nepal’ Highlights From The Great 37th FAO Asia Pacific Regional Conference”

Represented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, the Government of Nepal played a significant role in the recently concluded 37th FAO Asia Pacific Regional Conference. Headed by Honorable Dr. Beduram Bhusal, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, the Nepalese delegation actively participated in key programs, placing a notable emphasis on the transformative Digital Village Initiative.

The conference spotlighted Nepal’s proactive approach to integrating digital innovation and technology into agricultural practices. The delegation’s insights into this initiative garnered substantial attention, highlighting Nepal’s dedication to modernizing agriculture through technological advancements.

Aligned with the “One Country One Priority Product” initiative, Nepal underscored its commitment to promoting large cardamom. The ongoing export of this product has played a crucial role in bolstering the national economy. Discussions revolved around production, processing systems, and strategic approaches for accessing both domestic and international markets to promote large cardamom.

At the ministerial-level meeting, the conference focused on the agricultural agenda and priorities for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Least Developed Countries (LDCs), and landlocked Development Countries (LLDC). Nepal, taking the stage, presented perspectives on technology adoption in agriculture, commercialization, and market access, advocating for collective action to address challenges faced by these regions in achieving SDG targets.

In its comprehensive country statement, Nepal outlined agricultural sector priorities and areas of cooperation, expressing gratitude for FAO Nepal’s support. The government emphasized the importance of prioritizing hill farming systems due to the nation’s unique geographical features. Plans were unveiled for collaborative initiatives such as the Hand in Hand Initiative, Digital Village Initiative, One Country One Priority Product (OCOP), and Green City Initiatives, all aimed at propelling Nepal’s agricultural sector forward in the coming decade.

Throughout the sessions, Nepal actively participated in the Hand in Hand Initiatives promoted by FAO. Discussions centered around Nepal’s ongoing efforts in agriculture and food systems, emphasizing the critical need for increased investment in this sector from various funding partners.

At the 37th APRC, Nepal reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with FAO. Bilateral meetings between Honorable Minister Dr. Beduram Bhusal and Mohamed Manssouri, Director of FAO Investment Center, focused on collaborative strategies to enhance investment in Nepal’s agricultural sector.

As part of the conference, the Nepalese delegation engaged in a field visit program organized in Sri Lanka, providing valuable insights into various innovative programs. This initiative facilitated the exchange of knowledge and ideas among participating nations, contributing to a more robust global agricultural community.
