OpenAI made headlines by discussing its plans to explore generating AI porn in a responsible way. Yep, you read that right. OpenAI wants to start a conversation about how explicit content could be included in its products while still respecting the law and people’s rights.
Joanne Jang from OpenAI explained, “We want to make sure people have control over what they see, as long as it’s legal and respects others’ rights. Sometimes, content involving sexuality or nudity is important to our users.”
This isn’t the first time it has considered controversial topics. Earlier, Mira Murati, its CTO, hinted that they might allow their video generation tool to be used for adult content.

So, what does this mean for the future? It’s possible that it could successfully incorporate AI-generated porn in a way that’s respectful and safe. There’s potential for it to assist in creating adult artistic expression, as Jang mentioned.
I’m not sure if we can trust it, or any company making it that creates things, to do it the right way.
Think about the people who make things. It has learned from a lot of stuff on the internet, some of which is porn. But It hasn’t gotten permission to use all this stuff, or let creators say no to their stuff being used until recently (and even then, only for certain things).
It’s already hard for people who make adult content to make money. If it starts making AI-generated porn popular, it’ll be even harder for them. They’ll have to compete with stuff made using their own work, which isn’t fair.
Another problem in OpenAI is that the tools meant to keep bad stuff out aren’t perfect. It and other companies have been trying to make their tools better for years. But people always find ways to get around them and use the for bad stuff.
For example, Microsoft had to change their image tool after people figured out how to make nude pictures of Taylor Swift. And there are chatbots that can write dirty stories, even though they’re supposed to be safe for everyone.
It has made it easier for people to do bad things, like making fake pictures of classmates without their permission. Some countries are making new laws to stop this, but it’s hard for the law to keep up with how fast is changing.
Honestly, it’s hard to see how it could make generated porn without causing problems. Maybe it will change its mind, or maybe they’ll find a better way to do it. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
